Q&A: Booking Flights for Summer Travel

Submitted by Laurie Peterson, March 9, 2009
Question: Beth Imoff asks: For best prices when is the best time to purchase plane tickets for summer travel? Now, or closer to the travel time we want to travel – early July for us this year.

Answer: Diane Peplow, AAA Travel Agent, answers: I believe in booking early because airlines have limited seats for the lower fares and they go quickly. This strategy is especially important if travelers have more than one in their party or are traveling close to a holiday such as July 4th. Airline fares, as with many travel expenses, are based on supply and demand so sometimes waiting until closer to the departure date can be advantageous but it is not an exact science and you run the risk of paying more for a ticket if seat availability is limited.
